Today is day 3 on the specials calendar.
Thanks to all students and staff that helped with our Black History program. We had all of the old greats from the early days of Motown: Marvin Gaye, Jackson 5 and the Supremes and many more. It was a great program and we had a super turnout.
Grizzly Den shopping begins today. Let's make sure kids have plenty of bucks to spend.
Mrs. Sawyer is doing just fine. Please check the sign in board for the latest info. She may even be going home today, so before many of us run out to the hospital to check on her, let's focus on what we can do when she gets home (meals, cards and flowers)
Homeroom teachers, please review the email sent about recess yesterday.
This blogs shares the daily information, ideas and notes for The staff of Gibson Elementary. "Every teacher a leader, every leader a teacher and every child a success"-P. Schlechty

Today is day 2 on the specials calendar
Black History performance-9:00-9:45-K-2 and 10:00-10:45-3-5 performance. Please review PBS performance guidelines.
The program will be performed tonight at 6:30 in the gym.
Thanks to everyone who worked had on this program.
Please send Mrs. Winn any choice card requests.
The new incentive I mentioned yesterday is called the Golden Grizzly, not Golden Grizzly Paw; not to be confused with the specialists' paw.
Please remember no shopping cards are only given by administrators-No shopping cards or prohibiting students from the Grizzly den can not be tied to any other behavior system( turning cards or name on board or signing anything). This guideline is spelled out in our PBS staff handbook. Staff members cannot prohibit students from going to the school store. The only way a student is not to go to the Grizzly Den is if they receive a no shopping card from an administrator. Please see an administrator if you have a question.
There will not be a general staff meeting this month. Pleace review dates for future meetings and note this change-All remaining staff meetings will be in the afternoon. Even though some are listed as morning meetings, the remaining meetings will be held in the afternoon. Please adjust appointments and conflicts accordingly.

Today is day 1 on the specials calendar.
Mrs. Sawyer is still out-please review yesterday's email for an update in her condition. I will send information on her via email only.
Today progress reports go home.
Student assignment information for 2010-2011 goes home today. Parents who may want to choose another school may request a choice card. Please send any requests for choice cards to Mrs. Winn immediately. Also, please make sure your classrooms are orderly and neat-this is the time of year we can expect visitors and give tours.
Let me say as well on upcoming days for special occasions-dress needs to be more business casual-Kindergarten Registration is Feb 25 and March 1. No jeans on those days.
PBS committee has a lot of ideas to share-
First, There will get a chance for students to get a special recognition for following Gibson PRIDE rules. We will begin the Gibson Golden Paw soon. Students may earn a golden paw by demonstrating excellent bus behavior and by working well with substitute teachers. Since we have so many opportunities for subs to be in the building, the committee based on feedback from staff feels that subs need a little more "leverage". Only subs and bus drivers will distribute the Golden Paws and students who earn the paw will be recognized weekly and at the end of each month receive a special treat.
We are also in the process of getting the fantastic Gibson Rap videoed to show on PRIDE TV. We will let you know.
Finally, as a part of our preparation for our PBS school-wide implementation review, students and staff alike should be familiar with PBS concepts and ideas. Starting in March, there will be a PBS question of the day broadcast on the morning announcements, just like last year's problem of the day. Unlike last year, we are asking teachers to go over the right answer to the question and reward students with den dollars. How you do that is up to you-you may reward everyone with the right answer (recommended) or the person with the first right answer or how ever you choose. The main thing is to make sure all students know the right answer and reward as many students as possible.
Finally, Grizzly Den shopping starts Friday. Students should not have 3 or 4 den dollars to spend. Since the last shopping day, students, especially our younger students, should have had many opportunities to earn den dollars. If not, let's turn up the "heat" between no and Friday. make a personal goal to give out 5-10 den dollars before you lunch and 5-10 after your lunch and we should see students really earn the incentives.

Today is day 6 on the specials calendar
Mrs. Sawyer will be out of school for a while. She had unexpected surgery this morning. She should be fine, but needs her rest. I will share more information later today. Come by and see me for hospital details.
PBS meeting after-school today.
I am going to start a special recognition for students who have made certain academic achievements. I am going to call it Principal's Pride. I will review report cards and any student in K-2 will all 4's and any 3-5 student with all A's will be eligible. Students will receive a certificate and be recognized on the website and I will probably have a bulletin board created. This isn't an honor roll-no submissions, I will find who qualifies by reviewing report cards. I will probably have a Principal's PRIDE pizza party at the end of the year. More to come...
Teachers are not required but certainly invited to this Thursday's program. It is going to be a lot of fun.
Upcoming events-
Read across America week-first week in March
2nd quarter data sheets-due March 1. Please fill out completely and save-that way the only thing to add will be quarterly data.
March 2-staff meeting
I have talked to Mr.Torian and we are going to have a daily Olympic medal count report on the morning announcements. Give us a couple of days to get it together. Meanwhile, I encourage everyone to do some Olympic related discussions. (Don't spend the afternoon watching the Olympics though :-) Any ideas would be welcomed and shared as well.

Today is day 5 on the specials calendar.
Today is a regular student day. Any absences for today will be excused and not count against perfect attendance.
We have been allotted an additional half time position due to our enrollment increase. If anyone knows of a certified teacher that is looking for or will work half-time, let me know. We are looking for someone with certain skills, not just anybody.
Progress reports go home this week
African American history program this Thursday-school perfromances-9-9:45 K-2
10-10:45-3-5
Please encourage students to support the Haiti water drive sponsored by the Student Council.
There is a very good website that I was made aware of recently: http://thereadinglady.com/
This site contains great downloads and activities to promote comprehension. The posters are very nice. I hope to get them made so don't copy them yet.
