Today is Day 2 on the Specials calendar.
No School Monday-Labor day Holiday. Please remind students. A note will go home home.
President Obama will address the nation's children Tuesday, September 8 at 1:00. The broadcast will be streamed across the internet and shown on CNN-channel 6. WSFCS is asking all schools to show this broadcast. We will show the braodcast in classrooms and in the cafeteria. If you have recess at 1:00 please reschedule so your students may watch the broadcast. If any parents do want their children to see the broadcast, they may let you know by written note or personal contact. We will have all students who will not watch the broadcast go to one location and have a staff member supervise them. I will forward an email from Dr. Martin concerning this issue.
Fundrasier kickoff will be next Wednesday-times to be announced.
We will re-broadcast the PBS video this morning. No question for today, but some tips to remember:
Please emphasize the expectations in key areas such as bathrooms and cafeteria especially.
Teachers please remind students of the voice volume in the cafeteria.
The Gibson Grizzly Den will open next week, Please review schedule given out. Remember to give out those den dollars and remind students about our raffles.
Trish Gladstone, our PBS support from the district will be in the building today with a guest.

We should have someone in place for lunch duty near the end of next week. I will post a draft of duty free lunch using assistants on the juliangibson2020 wiki next week. Grade chairs. Please review and make necessary changes. Once the changes have been made and approved duty free lunch with assistants may start. Please remember to sit with students one last week and I ask specialists to eat with a class as well.

Today is Day 1 on the specials calendar.
Ron is in a meeting this morning.
Certified staff meeting today to discuss new teacher evaluation process.
Classified staff may take a total of 1 hour early for labor day between now and Friday. Staff afternoon duties must still be carried out. As email yesterday described, leaving twenty minutes early is one option. Once all students have been dismissed, leaving at that point is an option as well. Leaving early is an option as well for staff members that stayed extra for Tuesday's meeting or for staff members participating in this afternoon's meeting.
Visitors will be in the building tomorrow to observe PBS implementation.
Don't forget to sign up for the flexible benefits meeting-slots are almost taken.
Staff reminders-Computers/TV's shut off daily-(not just monitors)
Post Fire evacuation plan
PBS question of the day-What constitutes gang paraphernalia? Will staff come to a mutual agreement concerning what this is? Will staff have a meeting to make sure we are all one one accord? WSFCS has a gang intervention specialist. Administration can arrange a presentation for all staff.

Today is Day 6 on the Specials calendar.
Wednesday packets go home today.
Teacher evaluation meeting tomorrow.
The gravel parking lot is open for use now.
Please remember Mr. Funderburk in your thoughts and prayers. He is recuperating at home.
Please remember to sign up for a meeting for Flexible benefits-sign up sheet is in the office.
As stated on Tuesday, some copiers will be put back on the hallway workrooms. Give office staff an opportunity to input codes and make necessary changes.

Thank you to Mrs. Gumbs and Mrs. Blankenship for leading a training on the writing menu. Everyone listening seemed very excited.

Please keep in mind these energy saving tips-all computers and TV's must be turned of when you leave daily. The district is now able to pinpoint which computers are left on overnight. Who would want to be on that list?
Position blind upwards in summer and downwards in winter.

You should get a schedule for 1st, 4th and 5th grade measurement testing by the close of business today.

PBS raffles begin this week. The Gibson Grizzly Den will be open soon. Please be patient with the committee as we work through the kinks of this first shopping time.
Trish Gladstone will be bringing visitors to observe our implementation process.
PBS question of the day-What is Mr. Funderburk's (home-school coordinator) role in impelmenting PBS? Mr. Funderburk is able to have conferences with students who have demonstarted level one (1 )or level two (2 )behaviors in addition to the teacher conference. Sometimes, another voice gets kids' attention. Also he can be very instrumental in contacting parents. Any level three (3) behaviors go to administrators only.
Please continue to model and review PBS expectations. We will re-broadcast our PBS video this week.

Today is Day 5 on the Specials calendar.
Joint Principal's meeting this morning-Ron away in the am
STAFF MEETING TODAY-3:15-please bring staff handbooks.
Please add these corrections or additions to your September calendar:
Fundraiser kickoff assembly-September 9
September 14-Skate Night
ESL night is Oct 8, not September 24.
Minutes from the SIT meeting will be sent electronically in the next few days. Please see your SIT rep for clarification of the minutes once they are published. SIT meetings will be the Monday prior to the first staff meeting of every month. (next SIT meeting is October 5-all are welcome).
PBS question of the day-Why can't the consequence for cheating (level 2 behavior) be an "F" with the grade of 69 instead of a zero? Is the intent to fail the student or teach them cheating is not acceptable? Research shows that students who receive a zero on an assignment are 50% less likely to pass the class. I agree there should be a consequence, just not a zero. The PBS committee agrees that the intent of any consequence is to discourage the undesired behavior. The committee agrees to change the consequence for cheating on level 2 from zero to a score of fifty (50). We are asking staff to make the changes in your PBS handbook.
Kudos to Mr. Gordon for starting his own blog-"Mr. G's blogspot." It's great. He posts weekly, not daily, posting homework assignments and other important announcements for the week. GREAT JOB, Brian ! If you have started a blog or wiki, please share that info and we will share it others.

Today is Day 4 on the Specials calendar.
School improvement Team meeting today at 3:15 in the media center
Staff meeting tomorrow at 3:15.
Painting on the outside trim and doors may begin today or tomorrow, depending on the weather conditions. The same schedule applies for completion of the parking lot.
Please make copies of the weekly update and plan accordingly.
Teacher assistants in grades K and 1 need to accompany students to computer lab for the next few sessions.
Classroom walkthroughs will begin this week. Remember, these walkthroughs are 4-7 minutes and are not part of any evaluation process. Walkthroughs are a data collecting process used to provide information on instructional practices that could be identified to help or improve student achievement. Feedback and data from walkthroughs will be discussed at PLC meetings. Each administrator is expected to do 15 walkthroughs a week, so we will be in frequently.
We will begin PBS procedures governing arrivals this week. The late policy will be in force and communicated to parents.
Classroom teachers have received the parent handbooks. Please send them home this week. For older students, it would be appropriate to review certain parts of the student handbook. Remind students to return the signature page. Sounds like a good reason to give a den dollar, doesn't it?
PBS question of the day-I believe that some consideration should be given to the age of the child before calling it a level three offense. Example stealing-some youung children may not have learned the concept of taking something they see and keeping it as an incorrect behavior. I would hesitate writing them up for a single infraction. The same goes for vandalism.
It is important for all staff to consistently implement this approach. If a child commits a level three offense, writing a D-1 informs administrators and allows the appropriate action to be taken. WSFCS guidelines allow administrators flexibility in addressing the situation including a student conference or parent contact. Every level three consequence will not be punitive or restrictive in nature (time out or suspension) The age of the student along with other mitigating factors will always be taken into consideration.
We had a great student kickoff and first week. Let's give out those den dollars generously since raffles will start this week. We will show excerpts of the video on a regular basis.
