Today is day 5 on the specials calendar.
Welcome to 2010. I hope everyone has had a good break.
With a brand new year, comes renewed personal and professional commitments. Taking better care of your health, financial restraint, personal renewal may be some of the things we want to commit to in the new year. Please take the time to reflect on what changes you would like to make for your students and complete the following sentences on a piece of paper or journal.-(this is totally confidential and not to be shared unless you want to. Putting something to paper helps to provide greater commitment and accountability.) Anyone who would like to share can add a comment to the blog.
My New Year’s Resolution for my class is :
My New Year’s Resolution for my life is:
With projected highs in the 30's today and tomorrow-please do not take the students outside for recess. For those who want to get some fresh air-make it quick and everyone must be bundled up. On that note, please be mindful of students who may be in need of certain resources at this time of year; insufficient outer wear, other complaints of need. Please notify the office of students you suspect may be having a problem.
STAFF MEETING-Tomorrow-after school
Please review the wiki-juliangibson2020.pbworks.com for special grade level specific reminders
Please review Kim and Kendra's blogs this week for any updates or reminders for assessments ; DIBELS MOY assessments, common formative assessments, etc.
Now is the time of year to begin planning for 2010-2011 in terms of student choice process. Any choice information to be distributed should be given out in a timely manner and any responses returned to the office as well. This information helps determine our student body for next year and staffing needs.
Also, in the next report card, we shall send warning or concern letters to all K-5 parents for students who are functioning below grade level in Reading and or math (1's or D's and F's) These are not retention letters, just letting parents know there are concerns and requesting a conference. Please have the names of those students (K-2 to Kim D and 3-5 to Kendra S.) by January 25. I will get copies of the lists from them. If you don't have any names, please send a note stating that. I would like each homeroom teacher to respond to this.
PBS corner-There will be a second semester PBS assembly the week of January 11; the exact date TBD. We will take the time to review and reenergize students and staff deep understanding of PBS. We hope to have a lot of fun and focus on our core values.
Thursday, December 17, 2009
Today is day 4 on the specials calendar
WSFCS will close two hours early today-Students will be dismissed at 12:40 today.
We will serve lunch today at an a different schedule. You will receive a modified lunch schedule this morning.
We will also have a change in specials as well. Both schedules will be provided this morning.
Teachers, we will probably have many students absent or to be checked out even earlier. Please maintain organized activities and make the office aware of any major changes in your routine (combined class parties, etc.) so your class can be located if needed.
Transportation may be off despite the fact schools close early. Buses may not be called as expected-please be patient and maintain supervision of your students.
School Board policy states that staff need to work regular hours when school is closed early unless early dismissal is warranted by the superintendent and I will be notified to inform you.
Last night's Holiday dance was a HUGE success !! There were more parents and kids than I would have dreamed-(probably 300+). Girls were in frilly dresses, boys were in sharp looking suits and the parents dressed up as well. Several dads wore suits and moms wore fancy dresses.
Mr. Legins led the students in several musical games and snacks were served to any who wanted it. I spent much of the night pouring soda. The PTA did a great job pulling it altogether. Next year (yes, they are talking about next year), I would love for more staff to attend. You will get a kick out of it, trust me.
Please make sure custodians are aware of extra trash in your rooms so nothing will be left over the break.
Finally I won't post another blog until 2010. Have a great holiday and enjoy your time with your families.

We will broadcast the video of the Holiday program all through the day on Friday. The performance is in full costume and gives everything an entirely different feel.
Please make sure if you have any celebrations or parties(oops) this week that you notify the cafeteria and custodial staff so allowances can be made for lunch and extra trash details.

There will be a special Art opportunity for our students in the new year called Young Rembrandts. This is a weekly, tution based program that students can participate in using Art to promote creativity. Each session is 10.00 and runs for about 8 weeks. With all of the the things going on-You guessed it, Friday is the only day left. You should get info to go home today.
Monday, December 14, 2009
Today is day 1 on the specials calendar.
Teacher of the year voting ends today. The winner will be announced tomorrow morning.
Criminal background check information-The email I sent yesterday indicated the importance of completing background check information. I have since gained access to a database that lists staff members who have completed forms. In this case, no news is good news-I will contact any staff directly who has not completed the form.

First, third and fifth grade students will have health dept eye screening on Tuesday and Wednesday. Mr. Johnson has sent a schedule to classes involved.
A special call meeting for all K-2 teachers will be held Tuesday right after school. The meeting should take no longer than a few minutes, but if you are a SES provider/tutor, please make arrangements to attend this meeting.
Please remind students about the Holiday dance this Thursday at 6:00. The K-2 class and 3-5 class with the best participation
will win a pizza party.
Please make sure that you notify cafeteria manager if your class won't be eating in the cafeteria due to holiday treats.
PBS corner-We all have experienced the "Christmas Rush" and I don't mean being in a hurry. I mean the excitable, highly energetic attitudes of our precious 5-11 year olds. Add to that, the flurry of exciting activities, it's important to give students a little breathing room. Make sure activities are organized, interesting and focused. We don't expect to give any early vacations except for the most serious offenses and we would like students to stay in class as much as possible. There will be many activities that just can't be missed.
Friday, December 11, 2009
Congratulations to our fifth grade students and teachers and Mrs. Ayers. The Holiday musical was a great success. The songs and performances were outstanding.
Everyone that participated in Secret Santa should meet in the art room this morning at 7:30 to share a treat and learn who your personal "Santa Claus" is.
The AR committee did a fantastic job selling doughnuts yesterday. I believe 200 dozen were sold in all. Great job , committee and in today's economy, it never hurts to have a "fall back" career:-)
Third, fourth and fifth grade teachers make sure you sign up for planning days on line before your scheduled planning day.
We will be voting for our teacher of the year on Monday and Tuesday of next week. Please review the bio sheets from each of our three candidates.
Classroom teachers of Reading and Math, make sure you turn in all required reports to Kendra or Kim or Administrators on time. There are several outstanding reports from a number of teachers.
Our PTA Mother/Son and Father/Daughter dance is next Thursday from 6-8:30. The K-2 class and 3-5 class with the highest participation will win a pizza party. The limo ride for top sellers of the PTA fundraiser will be next Thursday as well. We will get a print out of names for you before then.
PBS reminders-This week and next are full of excitement and activity for students and some students may cross the line. Remember to use classroom discipline forms and if a child needs a D-1 make sure you have it filled out when the child comes to the office. Children who come to the office for disciplinary reasons without a D-1 will have to be sent back to class. The whole purpose of PBS is to maximize students time in classroom.
Do not use the strategy of sending students to another class excessively as well. We will have assemblies when we return to school from the break as "booster" shot of PBS.
Also, starting in January, I am asking teachers to provide copies of lesson plans to your assigned administrator in lieu of us reviewing them in class. With all of the happenings in a day, trying to get to classrooms and review plans adequately is just not possible between the three adminstrators. We want to provide good feedback, not just rush through something. If you do not know or have an assigned administrator, you will have one in January.

Music classes will have a regular schedule today.
Music classes will be canceled this Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday due to rehearsal and rehearsal performances for our 5th grade holiday program. I have just seen a little and it will be fantastic. All of the hard work of Mrs. Ayers, 5th grade students and teachers will be worth it.
The stage is off limits this week due to preparations for the play.
Grade level planning days are this week. Last week's blog listed the times for planning days incorrectly. Grade levels know when you have planned for your half day. Please keep that schedule.
Starting in January schools will be charged when computers and monitors are left on overnight. There is a process to identify which computers are left on. Make sure computers and TV's are turned off when you leave for the day. If you have to, let that be one of the student responsibilities. School funds will not be used to pay any charges that arise from computers left on-we will have to pass that cost on to individual teachers. I will try to send reminders to people who forget between now and then to help.
PBS corner-Students will be allowed to make gingerbread houses if they are chosen from this month's PBS raffle.
Thursday, December 3, 2009
Please cast your teacher of the year nomination by Monday.

PBS Corner-Please encourage students to take place in the December PBS raffle. The winning students will make gingerbread houses with Mrs. Chandler. We certainly thank Mrs. Chandler for spearheading this activity.
SNOW, SLEET, ICE...oh my !
With the possibility of white "stuff" falling, It's time to review WSFCS employee attendance protocols in case of bad weather.
Please review WSFCS staff guidelines inclement weather-Here are the expectations in a condensed form-
If school is delayed for one hour- staff is expected to report at their regular time.

Please listen to TV and radio broadcasts for any announcements on inclement weather.
You may find the complete policy by reviewing the on-line WSFCS staff handbook, The Gibson staff handbook. I also have hard copies of the WSFCS employee handbook. You may get one upon request.

You may also nominate a classified staff member for the classified staff member of the year on-line. Yesterday's blog contained the web address and Mr. Leak will send the link via email.
Today students will get reminder notices about the Mother/Son/Father/Daughter dance sponsored by the PTA. The PTA is encouraging advance sales as much as possible. The K-2 classes and 3-5 class that has the highest tickets will get a pizza party. Please encourage your students to have parents buy tickets.
We will also send home Title 1 parent compacts with students today. This form is a required component of the Title 1 program. Please encourage students to have their parents discuss them with them, sign and return. Turn in signed forms to office and I will provide a den dollar for everyone who returns a form. (Integrity).
Music rehearsal will continue this week at the same schedule.
Welcome to Ms. Monica Moretz and Melissa Ivester, both will be substituting for teachers currently on maternity. We are glad to have them.
Teachers who want to donate decorations or ornaments to our building trees may bring them anytime. If you would like your class to make an ornament, that would be fantastic ! We would like to have both trees decorated by the end of the week.
Monday, November 30, 2009
Today is day 3 on the specials calendar.
Staff meeting today after buses depart. Some staff are working in SES. You are expected to find out all information covered in staff meetings and are responsible for any deadlines or expectations set.
We have two trees donated by Mr. Blalock and Mrs. Chandler. We really want to decorate and set the mood for the season in our building. If each staff member would bring an ornament to put on the tree, I really think it would look great. I will get lights to go on one tree. One grade level has volunteered to make ornaments to go on one of the trees.
Two very special recognitions are about to take place for WSFCS employees. Our annual 2010-2011 Teacher of the Year nominations will begin this week. Teachers are nominated by co-workers and voted upon by all staff. Teacher of the year voting will be decided before we go out for Christmas break.
A new recognition for classified staff member is the WSFCS 2010-2011 Classified Employee of the Year. This recognition is the first of its kind and is long overdue. The objective of the award is to recognize classified staff employees. Classified staff can be nominated by any employee on-line at http://wsfcs.k2.nc.us/CEY. This address will allow you to access the on-line nomination form and criteria to be considered for nominations. Our own Ken Leak is on the CAC(Classified Advisory Council) executive board and can provide more details. The deadline for nominations is January 15.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
Today is day 2 on the specials calendar.
Revised ESL schedule starts today. There may be some initial "glitches" (some lunch overlapping) I will speak to teachers involved to iron them out. Just keep in mind the overall purpose of balancing student needs based on available data and serving the identified needs is driving force behind the switch.
Other schedule changes involve rehearsal for the holiday musical starring our own fifth graders. Mrs. Ayers has worked to have a block of afternoon rehearsal time and , as a result, has contacted certain grade levels responsible for switching music special time. No other specials should be affected and the change is no more than one day (scheduled music day). If she has not contacted you, your class will attend music as normal. A more complete schedule of rehearsal times will be given out at the next staff meeting.
Speaking of which, our next staff meeting is Tuesday afternoon at 3:15 or as soon as buses leave in the media center. We should have a brief presentation, a report by hospitality and a special sharing opportunity.
PLC's will meet as scheduled. Assistants covering, please be where you need to be on time. Remember, your responsibility will be to meet the class at the end of their special and monitor the students for about 20 more minutes. Teachers are expected to have very easy tasks for you to monitor with students. You are not expected to teach.
Please keep Mr. Funderburk in your thoughts and prayers. While he did return for a brief time, he had a relapse of sorts. He will be out until January. We are working with Mr. Leak to help fill in when possible.
Other activities:
Skate night
K-2 Science carnival this week.
A full schedule of December's activities will be included in the weekly update to be sent later today.
PBS corner is back-
With the holiday season upon us, The guidance dept and the PBS team have worked hard to get some very special items in the school store. These items will be excellent gifts children can give to parents. If I am not mistaken, adult staff members have been invited to preview the items for purchase. The point is, The PBS team would ask staff to "blitz" students with den dollars like we did the beginning of the year to allow students to have several dollars to spend in the store.
As always, we focus on giving den dollars for following PRIDE in and out of the classroom and take a second to state why the dollar was given-"You followed hallway rules or you showed respect by---".
If the DVD equipment is operating, we will also show the PRIDE dvd this week.
Monday, November 23, 2009
Today is day 1 on the specials calendar.
Mrs. Winn and Mrs. Sawyer are out today for sure.
Please make sure that custodians are aware of any trash or garbage from feasts so it may be removed today since the building will be closed for the next five days.
Speaking of custodians-please congratulate our custodial staff for working so diligently to clean our building. They received a score of 95% (out of 100) at the latest inspection. We are so proud of them and all of their hard work.
PLC facilitators will be trained today from 8-11:30 on the stage.
Hospitality committee will share details about the holiday social at the next staff meeting.
upcoming dates-
Skate Night-November 30
staff meeting-Dec 1-3:15 or as soon after dismissal as possible
If you do not have access to the internet or would like a hard copy of the employee handbook, please see Ron. The handbook is on line.
Do not forget to complete on-line authorization for criminal background check before Dec 14. Make sure you print a copy as well. The school board voted this policy for all employees, no exceptions.
Finally, HAVE A GREAT AND RESTFUL THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY.
Sunday, November 22, 2009
Today is day 6 on the specials calendar.
Mrs. Winn is absent today. Mrs. Sawyer will be out today.
Please let the cafeteria know if your class will not be eating in the cafeteria because of class feasts. It will help Mrs. Meckley in ordering food for the week.
Today teachers will get a copy of the revamped ESL schedule. Please plan to start November 30. There is no perfect schedule and we just have to remember that our first priority is to meet the needs of all of our students. Hopefully, the impact to the schedule is minimal. Please work to make sure your students understand their new ESL schedule. The ESL teachers will work with them as well.
No first or second grade PLC. The third grade PLC will meet as scheduled. All grade levels should have a PLC facilitator identified by now. The PLC facilitators will have a training tomorrow morning here at school with Mr. Johnson and Mrs. Hufstader. PLC facilitators need to call a half day morning sub for tomorrow (8-11:30) to cover for you while you are being trained.
This week will be filled with a lot of activities that may include parents and families. Please enjoy these days with your students and their families.
Thursday, November 19, 2009
Today is day 5 on the specials calendar.
Second grade testing continues today.
The staff survey has determined that the holiday social will be Saturday, December 12 and it will be catered. Other details and prices will be shared next week. We look forward to having a great time celebrating during the holiday season.
Please let the office know if and when you may have holiday feasts or celebrations next week. (this is not so we can do a favorite food tour!) We want to answer any questions that may come to the office.
Please make sure you complete and return the authorization for criminal background checks you will receive via email. Please read the email sent by Dr. Martin yesterday concerning this issue. I am printing a copy for my files. This does not appear to be an opt out kind of request.
I am so proud of all of the hard work everyone is putting forth to help our school reach our goals. Everyone is working so hard and it is really appreciated by all. Hopefully, more tangible ways to show appreciation will happen soon.
Please let me know of special activities and events next week. I would love to see all of the great things going on in honor of the Thanksgiving holiday.
Classified staff members, please remember that your get one hour off early Thanksgiving. Many of you have already taken some or all of that time. Please remember all supervision duties of students must take place still. Coming in by 7:50 or leaving around 3:15 for couple of days may be an option if you haven't taken that time.
Tuesday, November 17, 2009
Today is day 3 on the specials calendar.
Hospitality committee meeting today at 7:30
No Kindergarten PLC meeting today.
Fourth and fifth grade PLC meeting as scheduled.
SES tutoring today. SES students will be called to come to the cafeteria from the classroom. Please do not send students in advance. K-1 teachers have developed a plan to have K-1 SES students dismissed from the gym.
The PTA has finalized the amounts awarded to all classrooms as a result of the fundraiser. Mrs. Hill will get ordering information to teachers within the next few days. The amounts are less than in past years, but the PTA did ask me to remind everyone that they have a project or supplies funding process that can be very significant.
The PTA will be busy in December. The PTA is sponsoring Gibson's first Father/Daughter-Mother/Son Winter dance on December 17 from 6-8:30 in the gym. There will be food, music and activities throughout the evening. There will even be special opportunities to capture memories with photographs. Please send home flyers today in Wednesday packets.
3-5 teachers, please go ahead and begin to use the Word builder activities given out earlier this week. I have seen some exciting lessons already.
Also, please review the Classscape assessment information discussed November 9. Remember, the first assessment using Classscape is due in early December. If anyone needs to have a refresher or review the program, let me know and perhaps we can get together early next week to review high points.
I am still reviewing the updated ESL schedule before implementation November 30. Changes will have to be made and I want to remind everyone there has to be give and take in order to "get it all" in.
Monday, November 16, 2009
Today is day 2 on the specials calendar.
NO STAFF MEETING TODAY
SES tutoring today and Wednesday. New room assignments will be sent this morning. Due to the overwhelming demand, we have to add a couple of rooms.
3-5 teachers come to the computer lab after school to learn about World Book on-line.
Two tech workshops have been rescheduled until after Christmas break, Movie Maker and Audacity. Dates to be announced.
Skill of the week-Literary elements Strategy of the week-Note Taking
Hospitality committee-Wednesday at 7:30 in media center. Holiday celebration plans to be discussed and also monthly refreshments.
I have looked at ways to revise the ESL schedule based on my comments a few weeks ago. Copies were sent via email yesterday. The revised schedule needs to begin November 30. I will be working to address major challenges in the meantime.
Please check Kendra and Kim's blog for the latest curriculum updates. They will be posting this information in lieu of sharing a staff meeting. Please note any deadlines mentioned.
Skill of the week-Literary Elements-What could that mean? I know many of you are teaching this very broad topic well, but I did want to share a few things that you may find helpful.
Author's purpose, plot, point of view, conflict and resolution are just a few of the concepts that are covered by teaching students to reference fiction and non-fiction text. The skills calendar gives some of these topics in detail as well. The WSFCS Elementary Language Arts Handbook gives lessons and questioning techniques. The handbook is a humongous pdf file. I will cut and paste a document that highlights these concepts. To reach the entire handbook go to WSFCS homepage>departments>Instructional services>English/Language Arts homepage>Eng/Lang. Arts resources>Eng/Lang Arts Handbook. I know this is a long string, but the resources are worth it.

Skill of the week-Literary Elements

Partners in Math workshop today in media center after school.

Welcome back to Mr. Funderburk. We are glad he has returned back to school.
PLC meetings for this week. Today, First grade and second grade meet on the stage. Third grade will meet in 707.
Assistants responsible for covering classes need to be ready to do so.
Thursday, November 12, 2009
Today is day 6 on the specials calendar.
Today is Hispanic food tasting festival. Please bring your students to the gym per the schedule sent on Thursday. Specials will still take place. If your class goes to the gym during specials, the specialist will take students to the gym.
Congratulations to Mrs. Hill's Kindergarten class. They recently won CiCi's Pledge challenge and recited the pledge of allegiance on WBFJ radio. See Mrs. Hill for the web address to see a slide show of the kids. Great job, Grizzly cubs.
The Winston-Salem Rescue mission annually provides boxes of food for needy families for Thanksgiving. That effort is remarkable considering the almost certain increase in needs in our community. It truly is much better to give than receive. Mr. Funderburk usually is our contact person to identify students who would benefit from these services, but with his absence, the needs have almost been missed. Long story short, I need the names of any students who you feel would benefit from receiving a a Thanksgiving box of food tomorrow(Friday). I know it's last minute but I just found out about the possibility Thursday. To submit a name doesn't mean the child will automatically get the food. I will need to work with the guidance counselors to make final determination. Please send any names via email as soon as possible Friday.
3-5 teachers and AIG teachers, please sign up for and plan to attend the small group training on Monday after school. The purpose of the training is to learn about the Foundations Literacy program which will be used in Word study component of Balanced Literacy.
Wednesday, November 11, 2009
Today is day 5 on the specials calendar.
Tomorrow(Friday, November 13) is Hispanic food festival tasting day. Mr. Martinez has organized parents to come and provide samples of a variety of dishes. It was great last year and we think the students will have a great time again. Homeroom teachers will receive a schedule of when their class is to go to the gym. You should want your students to spend 20 minutes or so in the gym. Teachers, please remain with your students while they are in the gym. ESL classes are cancelled, but there will be a sub for Spanish.
There is a meeting Monday afternoon for teachers in grades 3-5. This meeting is mandatory for all 3-5 teachers and AIG teachers. If you tutor on Mondays, please let Mr. Johnson know so he can make arrangements for your group. The meeting will last about 1 hour. Sign up on-line under Small group instruction-location Gibson. Remember, several dates may be listed but we will not have to meet those additional days. Follow up can be done by grade level or in PLC's.
The PTA fundraiser was very successful and the board has voted to divide 30% of the profit among homeroom classrooms. These funds, remember are for ordering materials as in years past.
Homeroom teachers will receive notification of the dollar amount and the process for ordering materials. Fundraiser funds are divided evenly among homerooms not based on sales per class.
Another major undertaking the PTA has is to create a process whereby grade levels or groups (clubs, committees) can apply for "mini-grants" for supplies or materials. This funding is separate from the fundraiser proceeds and open to specialists and other certified staff members.
A copy of the form is posted on the Gibson website homepage under the PTA tab.
Please see any member of the PTA board or administrators if you have questions.

Hispanic Food festival will still be held on Friday. Mr. Martinez is providing a schedule to me on today. I will share the schedule will staff once I review it. We will send a note home informing and reminding parents about Friday. In the wake of the current health crisis, extra care will be required in serving and storing samples. Servers will wear gloves, students will be given hand sanitizer as they enter the serving area. We don't want to deprive students of worthwhile experiences but will be taking extra precautions.

Report card workshop-Tuesday October 27
Rc day-October 29
Rsv day-October 30
Please indicate your intentions for those days by signing up in the mail room.
Our school is due for a shipment of newer (not new) laptops for staff use. The ones currently used by teachers will have to be turned in. Please be prepared to bring in your equipment (charger and all) in the next few days. Mr. Torian, our tech facilitator, will give more direction in the coming days.
Copy Room Guidelines-Many teachers have expressed concerns about the amount of copies available to them with their personal copy codes. Class sets of copies should be submitted to Mrs. Orner to be copied. The copy limits you have are to make less than a class set. If you need a copy of two or just a few, you need to use that code on the copier on the hallways. The copy limits set each month will not change. If you run out of your limits, any copies needed after that (less than class sets, remember) will need to given to Ron for approval. If you need almost a class set, just increase the amount a couple to have extra. Example: if you have 18 students, ask for 20 so that Mrs. Orner will run them. Mrs. Orner will run class sets anywhere from 20-25 or 26. Bottom line, she will get you what you need. The extra copies won't hurt and you won't have to use your limits. If a grade level needs copies, give the original to Ron to be approved before it is sent to print shop.
Monday, October 19, 2009

All staff must make their plan known by Wednesday, October 28th.

STAFF MEETING-Tuesday after school
PLC schedules have been revised and grade chairs have been notified. Basically, PLC meetings will take place on two days instead of all throughout the week. The days are as follows: First, second and third grade PLC's will meet on Mondays. Kindergarten, fourth and fifth grade PLC's will meet on Wednesdays. The times are the same and the responsibilities of assistants for supervision remains the same. I understand that any schedule has it's challenges but participation in PLC's is a part of teacher evaluation and making this happen is a non-negotiable. There may be sometimes that using staff from other areas is unavoidable. PLC meetings will resume on November 2.
The Hospitality committee has met and will be giving a sharing some important info tomorrow at the staff meeting. The first thing staff needs to know is the holiday social is December 11. The place and details will be discussed tomorrow, with staff choosing their preference.
PBS corner-While this is an unusual post, it is certainly worth mentioning,

There should be two workshops listed for the Report card workshop-9:00 and 3:15. K-1 teachers should sign up for the 9:00 session and 2-5 teachers should sign up for the 3:15 session. Don't worry, though-no matter which session you sign up for you will get credit for it when attendance is taken.
3-5 teachers, please secure a half day sub for November 9 in order to attend the mandatory Classscapes training. Do not schedule any conflicting appointments and plan to stay the entire time. The training is from 12:00-until 3:30. Get your sub from 11:30-3:30.
PLC meetings will take place Mondays and Wednesdays starting in the last week of the month. I will share with grade levels the times for meetings. The same expectations apply-assistants will partner with teachers to provide the additional 20 minutes for coverage.
Mrs. Callahan has started a blog: http://callahans5thgradechronicle.blogspot.com Remember, any blogs by staff are listed on our homepage.
The hospitality committee has met and and is working on several ideas they need your help with. First, Please review the hospitality by-laws given to you earlier this year. If you don't have a copy, please contact Ron. The committee will be asking your input for possible revisions to the by-laws. The winter staff social is planned for Friday, December 11. More details will be shared and ideas gathered from staff in the coming days. A list of committee members is in your staff handbook. If your grade level or team is not represented, please send the name of someone willing to serve to Ron. More info to come at next staff meeting.

The PTA board shared the final numbers from the fundraiser. The profit wasn't quite as much as hoped for, but the PTA is committed to provide support for classroom teachers. As in the past, there will be a percentage divided among homeroom teachers. The PTA board also voted to start a process where groups of staff (grade levels or committees) can request funding for materials or projects. There is also a SPECIAL winter activity planned. There will be more info to come on all of these announcements.
PBS corner-
November special PBS events will be raffles every Friday of the Month. The raffles will not be events but "stuff". If you have some sugestions for the current hot ticket items (that are between 10-15 dollars) let PBS committee members know. We will raffle a girls' item and a boys' item each Friday.
Please make sure you write your name on Den dollars. Some den dollars have been turned in at the school store with no adult name on them. Also a quick word as to why the dollar is given will be more meaningful than just handing them den dollars. ("Thanks for walking the right way" can be said at the same time you write the DD.
Finally, the PBS committee is also looking for ways to motivate the staff as well. We have the kids eating out of the palms of our hands, so to speak. We want the adults to get the same warm fuzzy for doing the right thing. We will share ideas soon. We plan to announce teachers on the morning annoucements, provide lunch out and a couple of other things. Just our way of saying thanks for a job well done.

Skill of the week-Summarizing
Strategy of the week -Reinforcing effort
If your class would like to make cards for the family of Sgt. Hutchens, please let me know and I will pass them along to the proper person.
Please remember to give to the United Way. We are doing good, but need your help to make a difference. Last Year, 56% of our staff gave something to the United Way. it would be great if we could increase that to 70 or 80%. I heard a saying that goes: "It's not about equal gifts, but what's most important is equal commitment."
Mrs. Bland will also send home notices about kids bringing the dimes as well.
Teachers, please make sure you get your PDP to your administrator by October 16th. All of you have met at least once and you may be working the "revise" your PDP. If you need an electronic copy, let me know. If you have not met with your administrator at least once, contact him or her.
PBS Corner- We have several reminders and things to remember.
The PBS committee would like to thank everyone for their efforts to implement PBS. We are well ahead of others schools in our implementation. As with any new idea or concept, refreshers and reminders are necessary for consistency.
Review carefully the Staff expectations in your PBS handbook for all areas and situations. As I have previously stated, the example we set is what makes the difference. These expectations are just that-what is expected by all staff. These are not suggestions or "wish-fors."
Please make sure you are giving out den dollars regularly. At our November 3 staff meeting, the PBS committee looks at how many den dollar packs are being requested as one measure as to how reinforcement is taking place.
Please do not take den dollars away from children. Please review the PBS handbook concerning this.
Stay positive. Continue to focus on and accentuate the positive. Not just in den dollars, but in the things we say and promote. " I like the way you followed_____rule in the hallway instead of don't run in the hallway".
Our November 3 meeting will be a lot about PBS and your concerns. Stay tuned.
Sorry the posting is so late, I couldn't get online this morning.
AR refresher today after school

To those that may know him, Randy Fulton, the Principal of Mineral Springs Middle school has been named WSFCS Principal of the Year for 2009-2010. Congratulations to Randy and his staff.

Teachers in grades 3-5 will participate in training in Classscapes, a very powerful tool for creating formative assessments. Kim and I were trained yesterday and the implications are fantastic. Tuesday, October 6, 2009
Ron, Kendra and Kim will be in a workshop for most of the morning. They shall be learning about Classscapes, a database for assessments.
The Rc and Rsv days at the end of the month and in March have been switched. Thursday, October 29 is now a Rc workday. PBS corner-PBS meeting next Tuesday, October 13. Please give any questions to your grade level representative.
This morning Ron will be at a principals meeting until about noon.
Today is a busy day with a lot going on this evening. Staff meeting after school today, blog workshop for those who signed up and McDonald's night. The PTA is having a town hall/general meeting but staff presence is not required.
Speaking of the PTA, please join-our goal is 100%. The PTA is dedicating it's major expenditures this year to support teachers with supplies and materials costs not covered by the district supply list. Let's be supportive in return.
All PLC meetings will be canceled this week. Due to illness and conflicting meetings, I feel it wouldn't be appropriate to meet with some groups and not others, especially since all meetings are held during planning time. All staff may maintain their regular schedule this week.
Thanks for the comments about Curriculum night attendance. Feeding the families seems to be the consensus idea. We will work that out for next time.
Teachers may access the electronic PDP form by the link I sent earlier or going to the WSFCS homepage > Human resources>forms>scroll to teacher evaluation>follow that link to the PDP. Come by my office and I can show you if need be.
PBS corner-Trish is sharing some discipline techniques today. She is sure to give everyone great ideas. Our PBS data collection database indicates student behavior has had a dramatic change for the better. We will share the results at an upcoming meeting.

Today is day 4 on the specials calendar
SIT meeting today after school.
Tomorrow there will be a staff meeting after school. Some staff have signed up for the blog workshop. Please attend that workshop if you have signed up for it so you will be counted. Attendance will be taken at the workshop and at the staff meeting.
We have completed the first PLC meetings for some of the grade levels. The grade levels that have not met so far should be able to meet this week. New reading will be assigned after all groups have met once. Feel free to read on your own. Chapters 3, 4 and 5 and good to get started.
Our next staff meeting will have a brief presentation for United Way. Mrs. Bland and her committee are ready to guide this important initiative for our staff.
Tuesday night is McDonald's night as well. Please sign up if you haven't and can give an hour after school.
ESL night will be this Thursday from 5:30-7:30. The ESL staff has a program planned. All staff are welcome to attend. The ESL staff would like to offer childcare. If you are interested in supervising students, please let me know. Students who will be supervised by staff are K-5 ages only.
PBS corner-Trish Gladstone will share additional ideas for classroom discipline at our next staff meeting. The PBS committee will discuss the focus for this month at the next meeting. Please continue to stress cafeteria behavior.

Thank you to everyone for your hard work at Curriculum Night last night. The turn out was moderate but important nonetheless. Any suggestions to improve attendance in the future would be welcome.
If anyone would like to donate some leave to Mr. Funderburk, I have the forms. Any non-family members can donate annual leave days. Those days would be converted to sick leave. I spoke to him yesterday and he is missing everyone. Keep him in your thoughts and prayers as well.
We will receive information on this year's United Way campaign at our next staff meeting. Gibson staff members have always supported the United Way generously, and despite the current economy, I believe we will still demonstrate the caring spirit and support needed for the critical resource in our community.
SIT meeting will be Monday after school. Please give any ideas to your SIT rep, who should pass them on the the SIT chair April Murray.
PBS corner- The raffles for this month are popcorn and a movie and a pizza party. Also, Mrs. Bland and McCotter are having a Gibson Paws contest to help raise funds to maintain the Grizzly Den. Let's encourage students to participate in both programs.

Today is day 2 on the specials calendar.
Tonight is Curriculum Night from 6-8 pm for all certified staff. K-2 presentations will be from 6-7 and 3-5 presentations will be from 7-8. If a parent does not come to your presentation, feel free to give out handouts. If the the grade chair would let the office know where their group(s) are meeting, we can answer any questions that come to the office.
Congratulations to Bet Matthews, Gibson Teacher of the year. She was honored last night at a reception for all teachers of the year for the district. Bet is number one in our book.
Mrs. Bruce requests that teachers remind students to bring an old T-shirt to use in art class. In the current health crisis, the more students can avoid cross contamination, the better.
PBS corner-The basketball game was great yesterday. Thanks to everyone who participated and everyone who helped provide coverage for supervision. The students really enjoyed themselves. The game ended in a tie (and not a moment too soon, I might add). Any signs of soreness (walking slow, limping, etc.) by any of the players is purely coincidental. :-).
Mr. Johnson and Mrs. Snipes will meet with the bus drivers this morning on the stage, describing in more detail our program. Thanks to Mrs. Rominger for going the extra mile and getting some refreshment donations.
If possible, please sign up for McDonald's night on October 6th. The kids really get a kick out of seeing their teachers and other staff members behind the counter, flipping those burgers and cooking those fries (my specialty, by the way) and we get a pretty good return as well.
Please turn in entries for the Gibson Gazette today. Mrs. Blankenship wants pieces that have already been done, no theme and no extra work on your part. Just pull something already completed.
The PBS staff basketball game is this morning from 9-10:00. You should have a list of the students who will be attending. Students will be sent back to class after the game. If no one needs hospitalization afterward :-), we may discuss a way to do another at the end of the year involving more staff and students. (after hours, even sell tickets.)
Last night Gibson was honored by the WSFCS school board for all of the hard work of our staff and students last year. Our school was in the top 10 schools in composite growth in EOG scores. We had a 12.4 percent growth in our scores and ranked number 7. There is a beautiful plaque that will soon be on display. We were also recognized for making AYP in 2008-2009. Great work everyone. Let's build upon that success this year.
Several staff members have started blogs this year and Mrs. Charpentier has a link on our main website page to all of the blogs so far. That way, all of the blogs will be in one place. Congratulations to Mrs. Hamric on starting a blog. Whether a teacher creates a blog or uses the website to communicate with parents, both are excellent ways to use technology to reach parents.
Please remember all WSFCS maintained websites should be updated today. To prevent duplication, providing a link or the address to your blog (if you have one) on your website can replace retyping much of that information.

Many other staff members have started their own blogs along with the ones previously mentioned (I call them blogger nation). Check out the following blogs:
www.dooleysdigest.blogspot.com-blog by Kim Dooley about Curriculum issues in K-2 especially.
www.gibsonmedia.blogspot.com-blog by Kristen Charpentier about the media center.
Please review Kendra and Kim's blog regularly since many announcements and information about curriculum and instruction will be posted. Some may think that we have gone blog crazy around hers, but there is a "method to the madness."The benefit is that many things that are announced at various meetings can now be posted and time can be devoted to more meaningful activities.
Please include www.gibsonparentportal.blogspot.com in your newsletters and communication. It is our new blog for parents. If you want something included, just send it to me. I will post each Wednesday to this blog.
Reminder-WSFCS web pages are due to be updated tomorrow.
David is out at a workshop all day today.
Today the First grade PLC will be meeting on the stage.
Tech reminders-October 6-Blog basics workshop.(I know we have a staff meeting as well-can't be helped) Sign up if you are interested.
October 19-Wiki basics-sign up if interested. So far enough have signed up to hold both these classes.
All K-5 teachers must sign up for the report excel workshop for October 27. K-1 will meet from 9-10 and 2nd-5th will meet after school. Both trainings are 1 hour.
PBS corner-The staff basketball game will be tomorrow starting at 9:00. Students who have won the raffle to attend will be called by announcement. We will try to send a list of the names of students attending so you will know who should be leaving your rooms. The game should last about an hour. Then the paramedics will be called. :-). It will be fun. The raffles for October will be announced later.

Today is day 5 on the specials calendar.
Picture day in the gym. Classes will be called from the office.
Chick-Fil-A night tonight at Hanes Mill Rd.
This week, we will begin to meet in PLC's. Homeroom teachers, please read pages indicated in previous posts. Also, plan to bring the book with you. The room for meeting will be announced.
Curriculum Night, this Thursday for two hours. All certified staff need to stay for entire two hours.
If any staff not scheduled to attend would like to get paid to help supervise students, let me know. We will pop in a video.
I can let you know the rate of pay. (it's not bad for a couple of hours).
PTA fund raiser money can be collected on Monday. Just send the money in the envelope provided Friday to Office. The confusion was based on the PTA timetable. The PTA fundraiser was scheduled to end Friday and money is due on Monday. The PTA sent a note mistakenly identifying Friday as collection day, not last day to raise funds (and the weekend of course).
Long story short, PTA will accept all money whenever it comes in I would imagine.
PBS corner- Excerpts from the latest PBS meeting will be sent to help clarify a few questions raised by staff.
Thursday, September 24, 2009
Mr. Ken Leak is our SES coordinator and Title 1 parent coordinator. He will work closely to supervise SES providers and make sure things run smoothly.
The Title 1 parent meeting had a great turnout. Next week, a student-parent compact will be sent home with each child. For each child that returned the forms signed, they will get a den dollar. Just turn in your signed forms to Ken with your name so we can know who will get the den dollars.
October 1, next Thursday, will be our annual Curriculum night. That is a night grade levels share information with parents about curriculum for the upcoming quarter or year. Long range plans, grading information, activities are all things to be discussed. Most effective in giving a uniform message is when grade levels meet with parents as a team. Some teachers meet in classrooms as well. Either is acceptable as long as as a grade level, parents get a consistent message on what to expect this year. I expect all certified staff to participate even if you are not a homeroom teacher. Staff need to stay the entire time even though your main presentation time may be earlier or later. Kindergarten through second grade is from 6-7 and third through fifth is from 7-8. (I am typing from home and don't have the exact time in front of me-if I am wrong, I will correct it during the next post.)
We will have to have a brief meeting to discuss United Way giving. Date to be announced.
I will let staff know about coverage for Wednesday staff the basketball game early next week. If a homeroom teacher works with a full time assistant-that pretty much is a bet. I will ask other staff to help supervise students either through splitting classes or reassigning folks temporarily. I will let everyone know Monday.
PBS corner-Final staff basketball game raffle drawing Friday. Two more raffles will be held in October. More info later.

Today is day 3 on the specials calendar.
Fifth grade planning day
Title 1 annual meeting-tonight at 6:00
Any staff member paying hospitality dues by September 30 will get their name entered into a drawing for a prize and you know Barbara Rominger gets great door prizes.
Here's a request that everyone should take very seriously: Please do not cut through the media center during instruction time. During instruction time, the media center is a classroom and which of us would want someone walking through the classroom while we are teaching? Along the same lines, if you do go in the media center during instruction time, please be as quiet as possible if you are at the computers or reading or whatever you are doing. Students are easily distracted.
There will be a container set up in the lobby for students that want to make a donation for Mr. Gibson. Hopefully our families will respond favorably but anything will be welcomed.
PBS corner-We have started shopping again at the Grizzly Den. Students are really trying hard to follow Gibson pride. We are continuing to focus on cafeteria behavior. We will show the cafeteria portion of the video at different times during lunch. The PBS committee will also look at ways we can have students start lunch more calmly.
Phone call for the classroom disruption forms are not mandatory for level one forms. Just send home and most times you should get it back signed. If no signature, contacting parents is optional. Teachers should try to document some form of contact with parents for a level two form. (signature or phone call). Parents will always be contacted if a child receives a D1, but prior contact always helps in getting home and school on the "same page."

Today is day 2 on the specials calendar.
Fourth grade planning day
WS Little symphony for fourth and fifth grade at 10:15
Any donations for Mr. Funderburk should be given to Mrs. Sawyer. If you would like to donate sick leave, see her as well.
Mrs. Scott has started a blog at http://kscott-curriculumcorner.blogspot.com for the latest curriculum updates.
To better streamline the field trip process, I am asking all future field trips be submitted online directly to me for approval instead of either Mrs. Snipes or Mr. Johnson. Once your field trip is approved, I will forward it to the proper administrator to secure buses. You do not need to resubmit any field trip info given to them. Just from this point forward.
PBS corner-
The PBS committee met to discuss questions, provide clarification and make any direction needed at this time. Things are going well for the most part. Here are a few things we would ask staff to address:
The Cafeteria is an area that needs renewed focus. Students understand but are not consistently following the posted expectations. Teacher behavior is the biggest factor to impact student behavior. For the next two weeks, we want to highlight and focus on cafeteria behavior. We will make sure the cafeteria portion of the PBS video is shown despite the problems we are having with the broadcast camera. We will announce what channel to turn to after the morning announcements on Wednesday to re-broadcast that part of the video. We are asking teachers to review and reteach cafeteria rules using the PBS handbook. We will make sure the cafeteria monitor correctly applies PBS philosophy and monitors student behavior. Teachers if you are eating in the cafeteria and not having duty free lunch, I expect you to monitor and help students self-monitor voice volume. Remember this rule of thumb: If you are standing (in line for any reason), voice volume 0, if you are sitting (at table), voice volume 1.
Teachers with classes that continue to have difficulty adjusting their behavior may be asked to provide more direct supervision during lunch.
Tables for Voice Volume 0 (silent lunch), guests, and overflow will be labeled soon so that no one will be confused about where to go.
Tomorrow's blog will contain clarification for using the classroom discipline form to contact parents.
